Colonoscopy
Prevention of Colon Cancer
A colonoscopy is a procedure that enables a gastroenterologist to evaluate the inside of the colon, large intestine, or large bowel. The doctor uses a long, flexible, tubular instrument about 1/2-inch in diameter that transmits an image of the lining of the colon so the doctor can examine it for any abnormalities.
Those who have a history of colon cancer in their family history are advised to have periodic colonoscopies because of a higher risk for polyps or colon cancer.
